What do you want out of your retirement?
Your next stage
Understanding what you want out of retirement is essential in getting financially prepared. Retirement means different things to different people, and it is important that your financial plan matches your plan for retirement. For myself, I wanted to retire from teaching because it prevented me from doing things that I wanted to experience. I was interested in seeing more of our country, but also in getting more involved with coaching early career educators and teachers exploring retirement.
What is it that you want out of your retirement? Travel, time with the grand kids or another career. Understanding the realities of your finances in retirement is critical for deciding when you should retire, and what your next life will look like.
What to look forward to
Retirement is a time when people can finally focus on things they've always wanted to do but couldn't because of work or other commitments. Here are some examples of what people might decide to do in retirement:
Travel: Many people choose to travel during retirement, either domestically or internationally. They may visit new places or revisit favorite destinations.
Pursue hobbies: Retirement provides the opportunity to spend more time on hobbies or interests that may have been neglected during working years, such as gardening, painting, reading, writing, or playing music.
Volunteer: Retirement is a great time to give back to the community by volunteering at a local organization, charity or non-profit organization.
Spend time with family: Retirement allows more time for family and friends, so many retirees choose to spend their time with loved ones and build new memories.
Learn new skills: Retirement provides the opportunity to learn new skills or pursue an education in areas of interest, such as a new language, cooking, photography, or even online courses.
Start a business: Some retirees decide to start a business in a field that interests them, such as a small boutique or a consultancy.
Stay active: Regular exercise and physical activity are important for good health in retirement, so many retirees choose to stay active by engaging in activities like hiking, swimming, or golfing.
Relax and enjoy leisure time: Retirement provides an opportunity to slow down and enjoy some leisure time by simply reading, watching TV, or enjoying the company of friends and family.
Traveling on a budget during retirement is possible with careful planning and research. By choosing budget-friendly destinations, alternative accommodations, public transportation, retirees can enjoy a fulfilling travel experience without overspending. With these tips in mind, retirees can create a travel budget that works for their financial situation and enjoy the many benefits of retirement travel.
Retirement from teaching doesn't necessarily mean an end to working. Many teachers choose to continue working part-time to supplement their retirement income and stay active.
